DION KAYAK! and ROXY MUSIC REVIEWS!
KAYAK! BUMM BUMM BUMMMMMMMM!
MY REVIEWS OF THE ROXY MUSIC/BRYAN FERRY DISCOGRAPHY!
ROXY MUSIC (1972)
This was supposedly very groundbreaking when it came out. So I guess, it's considered a classic. The first half of the album is very strong, and has a lot of their most beloved songs. The second half is not as good, but it's more creative and Eno (who was with the band at the time) fans will appreciate the weirdness.
Rating: 8.5
Favorite songs: Re-Make/Re-Model, Ladytron, If there is Something, 2HB, Chance Meeting
ROXY MUSIC- FOR YOUR PLEASURE (1973)
Their second album was a little more mature and the band seemed more sure of themselves. Great songs all around with a lot (sometimes too much) jamming. This would be Eno's final album with them.
Rating: 9.5
Favorite songs: Do the Strand, Editions of You, In Every Dream Home a Heartache
BRYAN FERRY - THESE FOOLISH THINGS (1973)
When this release came out, people were a little confused about what to think about it. It had only covers and it wasn't weird at all. In fact, Bryan wanted to embrace 'normal' American music. Some thought it was good, some didn't. I think it's just alright.
Rating: 7.5
Favorite songs: A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall, Baby I don't care, Don't Worry Baby, Sympathy for the Devil, Loving You is Sweeter than Ever
ROXY MUSIC - STRANDED (1973)
Usually when a band sounds more normal, it's a 'bad thing'. It's also usually a 'bad thing' when a band loses a person like Eno. But Roxy Music not only survived Eno's quitting, they made a great record without him. The weirdness of the first two albums are almost gone, but the song writing is stronger than the first two.
Rating: 9.5
Favorite songs: Street Life, Amazona, Psalm, A Song for Europe, Mother of Pearl
BRYAN FERRY - ANOTHER TIME ANOTHER PLACE (1974)
Bryan's second album follows pretty much the same formula as 'These Foolish Things'. Every song is a cover except the last song. All in all, a good, but not great Ferry album.
Rating: 7
Favorite songs: The 'In' Crowd, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, It Ain't Me babe, Fingerpoppin', Help Me Make it Through the Night
ROXY MUSIC - COUNTRY LIFE (1974)
This is probably the best 'old school' Roxy album. The song writing is amazing. Country Life is the last album to have the classic Roxy sound.
Rating: 9
Favorite songs: The Thrill of it All, All I Want is You, Out of the Blue, Triptych, Casanova, Prairie Rose
ROXY MUSIC - SIREN (1975)
This album is when Roxy started to incorporate funk and disco in their songs. Very interesting change. They would perfect this sound on later releases.
Rating: 9
Favorite song: Love is the Drug, End of the Line, Whirlwind, She Sells, Both Ends Burning
BRYAN FERRY - LET'S STICK TOGETHER (1976)
Like his two first albums, all these songs are covers. But surprisingly, he covers Roxy Music on five occasions. A strange release, but pretty good.
Rating: 8
Favorite songs: Let's Stick Together, Casanova, Sea Breezes, Shame Shame Shame, 2HB, Price of Love, Chance Meeting, Re-Make/Re-Model
BRYAN FERRY - IN YOUR MIND (1977)
This was Ferry's first album that had original songs (finally). The album is pretty good, but still not as good as a Roxy album.
Rating: 8
Favorite Songs: This is Tomorrow, All Night Operator, One Kiss, Tokyo Joe, Rock of Ages, In Your Mind
BRYAN FERRY - THE BRIDE STRIPPED BARE (1978)
For some reason (mostly ego, I would think) he put Roxy Music on hiatus, so that he could be a solo artist. Even though, I like his solo albums, their still not as good as Roxy Music. This release continues in the same vein of his other ones: great music, but slight. Half of the songs here are covers, while the other half are originals. This might be his best 70's solo album.
Rating: 9
Favorite songs: Sign of the Times, Can't Let Go, Hold On (I'm Coming), When She Walks in the Room, Take Me to the River, What Goes On, Carrickfergus, That's How Strong My Love is
ROXY MUSIC - MANIFESTO (1979)
Maybe Roxy's most uneven album. Great disco/funk tunes with blah tunes. Strange brew. But still interesting. (NOTE: This is when Ferry started to have his 'jaded rich man' image.)
Rating: 8
Favorite songs: Manifesto, Trash, Angel Eyes, Still Falls the Rain, Dance Away, Spin me Round
ROXY MUSIC - FLESH + BLOOD (1980)
This is considered their worst album, but I'd have to disagree. Sure, this album is masquerading as a Ferry solo release, but Flesh + Blood contains some of the best (and beautiful) Roxy music ever made.
Rating: 8
Favorite song: Oh Yeah, Same Old Scene, Flesh and Blood, My Only Love, Over You, Running Wild
ROXY MUSIC - AVALON (1982)
Probably my favorite Roxy Music album. (and one of my favorite albums of all time) Usually bands lose steam as their careers move along, and Roxy certainly seemed destined to end in that kind of suckage, but this was not the case: Avalon is one of the most beautiful pop albums ever made. Unfortunately, this was to be the last Roxy album. Well, at least they ended on a high note.
Rating: 9.5
Favorite songs: More Than This, Avalon, While My Heart is Still Beating, The Main Thing, Take a Chance With Me, True to Life
BRYAN FERRY - BOYS AND GIRLS (1985)
My favorite Ferry album, period. I consider this Ferry's first true solo album. Very 80's and a little kitch, but very suave and sexy. A perfect album of it's kind.
Rating: 10
Favorite songs: all of them!
BRYAN FERRY - BETE NOIR (1987)
My second favorite Ferry album. Bete Noir continues in the same vein as Boys and Girls, but the production is more french and electronic. (which hasn't aged all that well) Great songs all around.
Rating: 9.5
Favorite songs: Pretty much all of them.
BRYAN FERRY - TAXI (1993)
Unfortunately, this is another album of covers. But some of the covers are fantastic. All in all, a let down (after a 5 year hiatus), but still alright.
Rating: 6.5
Favorite songs: I Put a Spell on you, Will You Love me Tomorrow, Just One Look, Taxi
BRYAN FERRY - MAMOUNA (1994)
This album is a very Ferry album. In other words, if you're not a fan, you might not like it. This was the album his fans were asking for: dark brooding production, reverb drenched sounds with electronic beats, and Ferry sounding very sad and sexy. Unfortunately, the album is a little over produced. Probably to hide some unfinished songs. But still, at least a handful of songs are fantastic.
Rating: 8.5
Favorite songs: Don't Want to Know, Your Painted Smile, Mamouna, Wich Way to Turn, Chain Reaction
BRYAN FERRY - AS TIME GOES BY (1999)
Ferry's first non-ironic cover album. All the songs here are from the 1930s. Ferry's band sounds very authentic, but Ferry's voice sounds ravaged and old. (probably from all the smoking) Since I'm not a fan of 1930s music, I don't know what to think of it. Although, it has grown on me a little.
Rating: 6
Favorite songs: The Way You Look Tonight, I'm in the Mood for Love, Where or When, Miss Otis Regrets
BRYAN FERRY - FRANTIC (2002)
After AS TIME GOES BY the fans wanted Ferry to do a real Ferry album. He gave them Frantic. Frantic is one of those half covers, half originals albums he does sometimes. The album starts off average, but ends with a lot of great songs. Not as good as his best, but still cool.
Rating: 7.5
Favorite songs: Cruel, Don't Think Twice it's Alright, Nobody Loves Me, Fool for Love, Hiroshima, San Simeon, I Thought
BRYAN FERRY - DYLANESQUE (2007)
In my opinion, this release was a mistake. Nothing wrong with it sonically (although, Ferry's voice is shot) but why did he need to make an album of all dylan covers. He already covered Dylan enough already in past releases! He's Bryan Ferry for godsake! He should act like it and make his own songs!
Anyway, with that said, some tunes are covered really well.
Rating: 5
Rating: Make You Feel My Love, The Times They are A-Changin', Positively 4th Street, Gates of Eden
